What Is CRI (Color Rendering Index)?


CRI is a 0–100 score for how accurately a light source shows true colors, compared to natural daylight. Sunlight is the reference — a perfect 100. The higher a light's CRI, the closer the colors it reveals are to how they'd look under the sun. The lower the CRI, the more colors get distorted, muted, or shifted.


Two lights can look equally "bright" and even read as the same shade of white, yet render the world completely differently. Brightness (lumens) tells you how much light you get. Color temperature (Kelvin) tells you whether the white is warm or cool. CRI tells you whether the colors under that light are actually true — and for the look of your home at night, that's the spec that matters most.

What is a good CRI for outdoor lighting?


For the white light you'll use most of the year, aim for 90 or above. A 90+ CRI ("museum-grade") light renders your home's brick, stone, and landscaping accurately, the way they look in daylight. Below about 70, colors look flat and washed out.


Does RGB lighting have a high CRI?
